The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum to host its first solo artist exhibition

- » with Sara Oliver from The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, Cheltenham

THE Wilson Art Gallery and Museum is welcoming its first solo artist exhibition in the new Sir Charles Irving Community Art Gallery.

Mina Stefanovic’s show, The Art of Lines, opens in the gallery on Friday, September 2 and runs until Sunday, September 28. Admission is free.

The new exhibition is an opportunity for the community, and visitors, to explore work by this up-and-coming artist. Mina studied BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and an MA at Royal College of Art. Her work has been exhibited at Tate Britain, Tate Modern and the Wellcome Collection in London.

The Art of Lines is Mina’s first largescale solo show, incorporating key themes that run through her main body of work: space mapping, movement, mark making and the ways in which these harmonise to create beautiful artworks. The generous size of the 70 sq m gallery is ideal for showcasing large-scale pieces such as these.

Mina draws inspiration from the movement and fluidity of the body form. Her art involves exploring shapes through the fragility of a line, and it dwells on qualities of quietness and intimacy, cherishing the extraordinary that lies within the ordinary.

There will be a series of free, nonticketed events, which will be announced soon, associated with the exhibition through September, open to all, such as life drawing, movement mark making, sketching in response to music and much more.

Artists who live in Gloucestershire are able to apply to use the community gallery to display their work. Applications are being taken for month-long slots between April 2023 and March 2024.

The Wilson is particularly keen to welcome artists working on the themes of the environment or creative technologies.

There’s still time to visit The Wilson’s first community exhibition in the gallery. Break The Cycle ends on August 28 in the community art gallery and reimagines denim that would have otherwise have ended up in landfill. The Wilson worked with young people from National Star College and Gloucestershire Carers, who created new pieces of clothing.

A trip to the new-look Wilson isn’t complete without a visit to the exciting new Wilson Kitchen arts café on the ground floor. Enjoy its seven days of food and drinks offers and pick up a loyalty card – purchase six cups of tea or coffee and you’ll enjoy one on us. There’s live music to enjoy with resident band Honeymoon Swing Band, who will be playing monthly on Saturdays, starting on September 10 at 12.30pm.
