College hopes Star appeal sees £380,000 raised for building goal
NATIONAL Star has raised more than a quarter of its public appeal target, for a project to support young people with complex disabilities, in just 30 days.
The charity has raised £382,282 towards its £1.5million public appeal that will see a new specialist residence built at its campus in Ullenwood, near Cheltenham, where it educates people with physical and learning disabilities.
Work on the £6million project started in July. It will provide specially adapted accommodation for young people with disabilities that fully meets their com- plex needs and provides stimulating spaces to live, learn and relax.
Deputy Chief Executive Peter Horne, who is leading the project, said the charity was delighted with the response. He said: “We are incredibly fortunate that so many trusts, organisations and individuals have already stepped forward to support us in the major development.
“We thank them all for their belief in the potential of the young people who we support.” The charity now needs to raise the remaining £1.1 million.
It is organising monthly public tours so that people can visit the campus and find out more about the charity and its work.
Mr Horne said: “This is a huge step for the charity so soon after the end of the pandemic and the challenging economic times, but trustees believe these facilities are vital.
“There is a huge unmet need for education and care for young people with complex needs.
“By supporting our appeal, you will be helping us build a brighter future for scores of young people with complex disabilities. Every gift will make a difference and is greatly appreciated.”
The development includes an independence and assessment suite. Each of the 13 bedrooms will have specialist overhead tracking hoists and ensuite facilities ensuring that privacy and dignity is maintained for those with high levels of personal care needs.
There will be wide corridors that can easily accommodate large electric wheelchairs, ensuring everyone can easily move around their home.
