AMAN who ran a charming old-fashioned corner shop in Cheltenham for more than half a century has died, sparking many tributes from those who knew him or his business.

Bob Webley had run The Corner Shop in Bath Road in the same kind of way for more than five decades.

Some felt it was almost as if it was in a time warp because it had changed so little over the years. Mr Webley had continued to put the latest copy of the Gloucestershire Echo in the windows of the shop, which was rammed full of all kinds of things such as newspapers, cigarettes, toys, public notices and greetings cards.

Some residents liked the fact that in an ever changing world little seemed to have changed at the site, while others were fascinated by its Aladdin’s Cave nature inside. News of Mr Webley’s death came in a notice at the shop.

It said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Webley on Friday, September 9, aged 90. He wanted to thank all of his customers for their support over the last 52 years.

“He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. We are grateful that he was able to do what he loved until the end.”

One of the many tributes to be paid to Mr Webley on social media was one that said: “Happy childhood memories of visiting the shop with my dad. Bob always took time to chat to people and seemed genuinely interested in providing excellent service. A local legend, RIP, my condolences to the family.”

Another person said: “Sad news indeed. For many years I would go to his shop for the children’s Christmas stocking fillers. It was an Aladdin’s cave filled with so many toys and gifts for all ages. Condolences to his family R.I.P.”

And one comment summed up many people’s feelings when it said: “We won’t see the likes of Bob or his shop again.”
