Why are we now scrapping the ‘sugar tax’?
ON a road trip in the United States a friend said he could buy one breakfast and share it with his two companions as it was enough to set them up for the day.
A few decades on we now have the same obesity problems here in the UK.
Election promises were made by the Conservatives to help curb obesity by introducing a sugar tax to fund sport in primary schools, a 9pm watershed on junk food advertising and a limit on “buy one, get one free” deals.
In a reply to concerns in May, our MP said scrapping this legislation wouldn’t happen, despite some of it being delayed a year to January 1, 2024. It now looks likely to be scrapped.
Will he step up to the plate and reverse this U-turn? Reneging on this commitment will only store up ill health and costs on to our beleaguered NHS for years to come.
