Residents warned over ‘Nottingham Knockers’

-

POLICE are asking residents to be vigilant after reports of ‘Nottingham Knockers’ over recent days.

Cheltenham police said they received reports of “young men offering items for sale”, who visited properties in Hatherley, Benhall and Charlton Kings on Thursday, September 29.

According to Gloucestershire Constabulary: “Nottingham knockers are door-to-door traders who often offer cheap household items on your doorstep.

“They often claim to be on a rehabilitation scheme trying to find work and may have a false ID or trading permit.

“Nottingham Knockers are not part of any recognised rehabilitation scheme - the government-backed Community Payback scheme does NOT involve door-to-door sales.

“The conmen will cover a number of streets looking for vulnerable victims they can scam, [and] streets that are targeted by Nottingham Knockers often see an increase in distraction type burglaries.

“As well as this anyone that gives money to them may find themselves the target of other scams including things such as rogue builders.

“If you have a vulnerable family member or neighbour suggest that they put a ‘no cold calling’ sign up. Also remind them not to answer the door to unknown/unexpected guests.”
