‘Eyesore’ Council promises to get rid of huge roadside weeds

ACOUNCIL boss has promised to clear huge weeds that have grown several feet high on one of the main roads in and out of Cheltenham.

The pledge was made after local authority officials came under fire from a disgruntled motorist.

The Cheltenham resident, who asked not to be named, contacted the Echo’s sister website Gloucestershire Live to say he was disappointed at the state of a long stretch of Tewkesbury Road.

He said: “It’s a real eyesore. There are not just a few small weeds, there are loads of them.

“Some of them are massive and in some areas the vegetation is quite thick.

“There is one area, at the junction of Hayden Road and Gallagher Retail Park, where the island in the middle of the road is covered in weeds.

“It’s been like that in the past, in previous years, and I think the council should deal with it. What does it say about our town that we let one of our main entrances get like this?

“There will be people driving into Cheltenham for the first time who will think it looks very untidy and unloved.

“It doesn’t create a very good first impression.”

Karen Watson, Cheltenham Borough Council’s environmental partnerships manager, said: “We are working closely with Gloucestershire County Council’s highways department to seek to safely clear the vegetation in this area of the highway as quickly as possible and as a matter of priority.”
