Housing plan Bid to build seven homes on former playing field

ABID to build homes on a disused former school playing field in Cheltenham has been made to the borough council.

The plan is to create housing suitable for first-time buyers, families, professionals and more mature homeowners in an area of larger houses.

The seven homes would be built on grassland off Stone Crescent in the town, north of King George V playing field. The plan is for three-bedroom homes which the application says are more sought after in an area with “an abundance” of four and five bedroom properties.

As well as the houses, there would be four garages and 14 parking spaces in the cul-de-sac development. An access road has already been approved as part of a previous application.

In the application to Cheltenham Borough Council, New Dawn Homes said: “Given the lack of new properties in Cheltenham these homes will be desirable to both local people and people wishing to move to the area. The houses will make ideal family homes and the smaller properties will be affordable to first-time buyers and would also suit older people wishing to trade down to smaller properties near established facilities with lower maintenance and more mobility friendly.”

And it added the proposed development “will encourage a mix of households from single people and young families together with more established families in the area. This will help to preserve and develop a balanced community. The site is within easy walking distance of the local facilities and is just 1 .4 miles from the town centre of Cheltenham, walkable to local shops and schools, with easy access to shopping and local transport, with bus stops nearby, and access to national transport networks from Cheltenham Spa railway and bus stations.”

The application said: “Given the housing shortage in the Borough the development will fulfil a social role as well as supporting growth in the housing/construction industry locally, and longer term additional residents will support the town’s economic growth.” Concluding the application, New Dawn Home “respectfully requested that planning permission is granted without delay so that this scheme can provide a contribution to the Council’s housing supply in an appropriate sustainable location.”
