Doubts over Burger King’s drive-thru site
THERE is doubt about whether Burger King will open a planned new drive-thru restaurant in Cheltenham.
The Crown Estate was granted planning permission by the borough council in March for the fast food business at the town’s Gallagher Retail Park, off Tewkesbury Road.
Councillors gave the green light to the plans for the restaurant, external seating area and parking space next to The Food Warehouse store, opposite the Sainsbury’s petrol station. At that time, it was said that the restaurant would be occupied by Burger King and it was expected to open seven days a week, between 10am and 11pm.
Planning permission was granted despite some members fearing that peak time traffic jams in the area would be made worse by the arrival of the drive-thru.
But eight months on, there is no sign of any work starting on the site,.
Burger King, which has a restaurant in High Street gave very little away in its response to our request for information about the planned development. Its spokesperson said: “Burger King(r) UK is regularly evaluating opportunities to bring our great-tasting products to more guests in new locations, however, we do not currently have any information regarding a restaurant at this location.”
