Six-try Old Cents prove too strong for Okehampton

-

OLD Centralians won their second Regional 1 South West game on the trot with a 41-7 win over Okehampton.

The game was rearranged from the opening day of the league season, and coming back to near full strength Cents proved too strong.

Cents managed to get a try scoring bonus point, running in six tries with two apiece for Alex Cox and Tom Broady and one each for Liam Hemming and Nathan Stroud.

Hemming completed the scoring by converting four tries and adding a penalty as Cents moved up to seventh in the table.

Cheltenham North gained their first win in Counties 1 Western North, beating Avonmouth Old Boys 46-14.

Joeli Suguvanua scored the opener, with Justin Lee converting, and he added a penalty to make it 10-0.

Avonmouth responded with a converted try to make it 10-7 at halftime but North took control with tries for Sisa Caucau and Akuila Koroitamana, both converted to make it 24-7.

The hosts scored a second converted try, but North pulled away with tries from Maika Qauqau, Aporosa Naisake and Koroitamana for a comfortable win.

Tries from Joe Porter, Rhys Price and Kai Turner gave Coney Hill a 19-14 Counties 2 Gloucestershire North win over Old Richians.

Carl Fritchley added two conversions, with Richians’ points coming from a try for Nicky Godsell, with all the others from Adam Wallace’s boot.

Akeem Richards scored twice as Widden Old Boys beat Fairford 41-7 in Counties 3 Gloucestershire North.

Widden raced into a 15-0 lead with two tries and a penalty, but on the stroke of half time Fairford scrum-half Jake Page-maskall scored a well taken try, converted by skipper and fly half Harri Cummings.

Rilwan Lawal, Danny Rudge, Paddy Joyce and Jordan Walker also scored tries for Widden, Walker kicking four conversions and a penalty

Norton edged to a 15-14 win over

Minchinhampton, with Brad Hunt and Craig Johnstone scoring their tries.

Cam Brady converted one and added a penalty, while Joe Meddfinn and Steve Davies scored the tries for Minch, Ben Pope converting both.

Cheltenham II edged out Newent II 20-19 in Counties 3 Gloucestershire North.

They opened the scoring after a Newent penalty failed to make touch and, from near their own 22, Cheltenham elected to run the ball back at their visitors.

They switched the attack to the right and found themselves clear to run in a superb try by Tyler Farley, converted by Kieran Cox.

Newent came back at Cheltenham and after an excellent penalty to touch by outside half Josh Preston, the pack won the lineout.

After several phases a great inside pass by Preston, was taken on the burst by Leo Oakey, who sliced through for an unconverted try.

Newent went in front from a lineout near the five-metre line. A drive to the line by the pack resulted in

Oakey being stopped illegally and referee Marc Barwick had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try.

Cheltenham immediately responded after Newent failed to make touch just outside the hosts 22 as they scored another excellent try by Kiti Gavidi in the corner which went unconverted.

Then a long penalty from Preston found touch inside the Cheltenham 22 and from the lineout Newent rumbled forward twice before Leo Oakey got the touchdown. Preston converted from the touchline for a 19-12 half-time lead.

After the break, Cheltenham won a penalty and elected to kick for goal which proved to be a wise decision as Cox cut the gap to 19-15.

With minutes to go, a crunching tackle by Roberts looked to have stopped a Cheltenham attack but the loose ball fell to the Tigers who capitalised with a try under the posts by Rich Athey.

They failed to convert, however, and Newent threw everything into attack which provided an exciting finish, but Cheltenham put the ball into touch to win the match.
