Climbing up Cirencester take unbeaten run to nine matches

-

CIRENCESTER Town extended their unbeaten run to nine Southern League Division One Central games with a 2-0 win over Harlow Town.

After being bottom of the table before this run of seven wins and two draws, John Brough’s side have now climbed to seventh in the table.

The latest were Harlow, the game reversed to The Corinium Stadium because of issues with Harlow’s pitch.

Despite going a man down mid-way through the first half, Harlow battled valiantly to keep the Centurions at bay but succumbed to goals shortly after the mid-point of the second half and in added-time.

The game started with too many long balls from both sides, there was only glimpses of the ability available.

Shortly after the mid-point of the first half, Harlow were reduced to 10 men when Levi Irving latched onto a miskick and was brought down as he attempted to take advantage - the referee deciding Josh Steele was the last man.

Harlow reorganised and relied on counter attacks and it proved difficult for Cirencester to break them down until mid-way into the second half a deep corner reached Cheltenham Town loanee Jay Simpson at the back post and he drove the ball into the net.

With nothing to lose Harlow brought on another forward and the final few minutes were tense until Jake Lee added a second with a powerful header at the back post.

In Division One South, Hamworthy United won 2-1 on their first-ever visit to Evesham United on Saturday.

In the 18th minute George Calverley put the visitors one up getting a slight touch to a corner.

They were 2-0 up in the 76th minute, Sean Wright scored with a shot from close range following a corner.

Dan Griffiths pulled a goal back two minutes later, and soon after Evesham were awarded a penalty for handball, but Adam Mace’s penalty was easily saved.

Bishop’s Cleeve’s game at Willand Rovers fell victim to the weather.

Both sides finished with 10 men as Fairford Town were beaten 1-0 at home by Roman Glass St George in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Roman Glass were a man down after Jamal Lawrence was hauled down by Jack Spark as he was clean through on goal.

But they took the lead from the penalty spot through Louis Ward 12 minutes from time before numbers were evened up when Lawrence was given a second yellow and sent off.

The Reds gave a debut to Cheltenham Town second year scholar Rio Spencer, who has joined them on a month’s loan, and came off the bench.

In Division One, bottom side Cirencester Town Development lost 2-0 to Kidlington, while the games between Bourton and Calne and Cheltenham Saracens v FC Stratford were washed out.

On Monday night, Hartpury University won 2-1 at Evesham United Development in the league’s Challenge Cup, Mike Symons scoring the goals after 54 and 70 minutes.
