Vital knowledge
I am an avid reader of your magazine and spend hours dissecting it from cover to cover, finding areas to help my game. Your recent issue could not have been better timed. It was like destiny was calling – well, that’s what I told my wife anyway.
I’ve been having an issue with my driver for a while, so have stuck to my 4-iron off the tee to avoid those dreaded first-hole nerves and to get some consistency, even if not necessarily at the yardage I would like.
Then, flicking through Golf Monthly, I noticed the articles about how to drive it further and additional instruction on key driver tips, as well as the huge 2016 Driver Test. All this was great, but I had a driver – it just wasn’t doing what I wanted it to! That was until I found the article about torque, which informed me about swing speeds and incorrect shaft stiffness.
Intrigued, I decided to go and seek professional advice around the
subject. Lo and behold, my driver had a regular (flexible) shaft but my swing speed (approximately 110mph) was way too much for the shaft I had. This explained the inconsistency I’d been experiencing (well, I can’t blame it all on the club, I have to take some responsibility myself!).
So, armed with this revelation, after two years of owning the club I went back to Golf Monthly with a fresh pair of eyes. The driver test was really interesting to start with, but had now become invaluable.
Thanks to you, I am now testing different drivers in order to find the best one for me based on my individual swing, knowing I’ll also have improved swing confidence. Ed Kemp, via email
