When a course is al­ready rated 4th, as the Ailsa is, in our cur­rent Top 100 Rank­ings, there’s lim­ited scope for up­ward move­ment. Yet the re­cent trans­for­ma­tion of the fa­mous Ayr­shire links un­der Don­ald Trump’s own­er­ship has taken things to a whole new level.

The changes start from the off, with the 1st green now pushed back fur­ther right and dis­tinc­tive roughedged bunkers in­tro­duced. Ev­ery hole has un­der­gone some kind of change, even if merely a re­lay­ing of the green to en­sure con­sis­tency. But the most dra­matic trans­for­ma­tions have been The new par-5 10th to the coast-hug­ging stretch from the 4th to the 11th – holes al­ready re­garded as the stars of the show.

Course ar­chi­tect Martin Ebert over­saw the am­bi­tious project, with cer­tain al­ter­ations paving the way for other pre­vi­ously unimag­in­able changes. The daunt­ingly long par-3 6th has been re­placed by a mere 171-yarder, al­low­ing the 18th tee to be moved up on to the dunes to cre­ate a new fi­nale play­ing straight back to­wards the im­pos­ing ho­tel.
