When a course is already rated 4th, as the Ailsa is, in our current Top 100 Rankings, there’s limited scope for upward movement. Yet the recent transformation of the famous Ayrshire links under Donald Trump’s ownership has taken things to a whole new level.
The changes start from the off, with the 1st green now pushed back further right and distinctive roughedged bunkers introduced. Every hole has undergone some kind of change, even if merely a relaying of the green to ensure consistency. But the most dramatic transformations have been The new par-5 10th to the coast-hugging stretch from the 4th to the 11th – holes already regarded as the stars of the show.
Course architect Martin Ebert oversaw the ambitious project, with certain alterations paving the way for other previously unimaginable changes. The dauntingly long par-3 6th has been replaced by a mere 171-yarder, allowing the 18th tee to be moved up on to the dunes to create a new finale playing straight back towards the imposing hotel.
