I cannot be the only person who thinks the Hero World Challenge is farcical. It is invitation only and there are just 18 players in the field at the start of the week. And yet, despite not being an official tournament, it has the same number of world ranking points as the Houston Open, the CIMB Classic, the Dubai Desert Classic and the Scottish Open – big, meaningful events with some excellent fields.

What actually is the point of the tournament? It is at the end of the year so pretty much none of the players want to compete in it, nor do the majority of people want to watch it. Indeed, it is illuminating that the World No.1 Brooks Koepka had better things to do than play in it, as did Rory Mcilroy, Jordan Spieth, Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood.

To top it off, it is held on a soulless and uninspiring course in The Bahamas. The Hero World Challenge is a pointless and unnecessary tournament that does nothing for the game.
