2019 CALLAWAY BIG BERTHA IRONS AND HYBRIDS

The best new gear

Big Bertha is one of the most iconic names in golf equipment. It’s synonymous with distance, stemming right back to the earliest metal driver designs. It has also been prevalent in Callaway’s irons down the years, and the latest Big Bertha irons and hybrids, which replace Big Bertha OS, are said to deliver faster ball speeds and easier launch.

On the irons, this is thanks to something called the Suspended Energy Core. It starts with a metal injection moulded floating tungsten weight suspended within Callaway’s Urethane Microsphere material. This allows the centre of gravity to be positioned deeper in the clubhead, which promotes a higher launch.

Then a new thinner and faster 360 Face Cup, boasting a shallow, flexible rim around the perimeter of the face, combines with the Suspended Energy Core to deliver longer ball flights. Looks wise, a smoked PVD finish creates a clean, premium aesthetic.

The new Big Bertha hybrid is the first to combine Jailbreak and adjustability for fast ball speeds and easy launch. Jailbreak, first seen on the GBB Epic woods from 2017, uses two internal bars that stiffen the body to place more impact load on the face, resulting in extra distance. These bars work with the Hyper Speed Face Cup, increasing power across the face. Callaway has also introduced a shorter and lighter Optifit hosel, saving weight to increase launch. Available in 3H to 8H, the large, progressive head shaping is said to be both appealing to look at and forgiving on off-centre strikes. Available from March, the Big Bertha irons will have an RRP of £1,149 in steel shafts or £1,399 in graphite shafts. The Big Bertha hybrid will have an RRP of £269.

GM SAYS

Interestingly, the lofts of the Big Bertha irons are the same as Rogue, yet Big Bertha gave us more ball speed and lower spin. As such, they were one club longer. This range is ideal for those short on club speed looking to hit shorter irons into greens.
