H E A D T O HEAD PING G410 Shaft: 7-iron loft:
Which of our two favourite new game-improvement irons takes the spoils?

LOOKS
The G410 has a larger footprint with more offset, although the hitting area is similar in size to the M5. As a result, it looks a little more inviting to hit, but the superfluous metal may not suit everyone’s eye.
FEEL/ SOUND
It feels very stable and faster than G400. It wasn’t quite as hot as M5, but it was consistent across the face and the sound is very pleasing – a quiet and fairly understated ‘hit’ at impact.
FORGIVENESS
The tungsten weighting contributes to extra clubhead stability, as proven by the carry distances, which were extremely consistent – ranging from 173 to 178 yards. Most errant strikes will still find the putting surface.
BALL FLIGHT
Shots launched nice and high with G410, quashing any concerns over the slightly lower spin. Regardless of swing speed, you should be able to find the right balance to produce a strong, rainbow flight.
OVERALL APPEAL
G410 is ideal for those who prefer a larger look to instil confidence and aid off-centre forgiveness. The distance consistency impressed, but it perhaps doesn’t have the M5’s ‘wow’ factor from the middle.
BALL FLIGHT
The flight was high – similar to G410. With the shaft being a little longer, we got a fraction more club speed, which will have contributed to some of the extra ball speed and carry distance.
OVERALL APPEAL
M5 does feel hotter off the face, and offers more distance from a slimmer package with good levels of forgiveness. But distances weren’t as consistent and it comes with a more premium price tag.
