Golf Monthly

Brighter days ahead

-

Last year was a di cult time for everyone. The e ects of the Covid pandemic have impacted on every facet of our lives, and I know that for many people 2020 brought much personal sadness and loss. Just how much we love and value the game of golf was really brought home, too, during the months where we missed being able to play.

And then, when we were allowed back on the course, the disruptions were many and varied. Some of the simple things we take for granted and which are the very fabric of our game – like being able to shake hands with playing partners on the 18th or enjoying a care-free post-round drink while discussing golf, life and everything in between – are, for obvious reasons, no longer appropriate. On top of all this, in the wider world of golf we missed not having an Open Championship or a Ryder Cup.

Life and golf – and to a lot of us they’re one and the same – have been hugely di erent of late and we have had to search hard for the rays of sunshine amidst the gloom. I hope that in a small way each issue of Golf Monthly that has landed with you in the last 12 months has given you a golfing fix and helped you feel more connected to our great game.

With the Covid vaccine being rolled out, I’m feeling hopeful that 2021 will see brighter days for us all. Life can hopefully start getting back to normal and we can plan our golfing activities with more confidence.

This year is going to be a special one for Golf Monthly as it marks our 110th year of publication. As part of that landmark anniversary, I’m pleased to say that we will be introducing a range of exciting new subscriber benefits. From access to exclusive content to subscriber-only competitions and opportunities, we want to reward our most loyal readers. If you’re not currently a subscriber then hopefully these extra incentives will give you something to consider.

And finally, this issue contains a number of tributes to the late, great Peter Alliss, who sadly died in early December. The column on the inside back page from Bill Elliott – a great friend of Peter’s – is a wonderful, touching piece that gives a personal insight into the sort of person he was. It’s a very fine bit of writing about someone who made such a great di erence to so many. He’ll be much missed.
