How to create more swing speed

- By Top 25 Coach Andrew Jones

To increase swing speed, you could spend time in the gym working with resistance bands and slam balls, as many big-hitting tour pros do. But most of us will be looking for other options. I like using a weighted swing stick with a lightweight driver shaft, which is great for overspeed training. What you’re trying to do is simply train your body and muscles to work at faster speeds. Over time, you should be able to get the stick swishing faster through impact.

2

If you ever watch the long-drive champions, you’ll notice they almost seem to jump away to the left through impact, which allows them to clear the left hip very quickly. Clearing the left hip through the hitting zone becomes more important as you generate more speed. A good way to encourage this is to turn your left foot out slightly at address – perhaps by 10˚ to 15˚.

You can also work on width in the backswing and grip pressure with the stick or a club. Keeping grip pressure light, try to create as wide a backswing arc as possible (without swaying) so you can then achieve a nice stretch at the top. From here, don’t be tempted to apply the power early by pulling down with your arms. Start by driving your weight to the left to create the lag that leads to power.
