Bunker shot

- By Top 25 Coach Barney Puttick

It’s about minimising the potential for a big number. Here, there are more bunkers beyond the first one that you could find if you hit the 50-yard shot heavy. Laying up in the fairway short of the bunkers greatly increases your margin for error.

2

If you can’t clear the 50-yard bunkers by 20 yards, I would recommend laying up 20 yards short to take them out of play. There’s always a temptation to hit it as far as possible, but even if you do carry the bunkers, you could end up with a tricky stance.

It’s hard to force yourself to hit three clubs less, but it’s all about scoring. If you find those bunkers, you could well take four or more to get down. From the fairway, you’ll probably get down in three, but you’ll also stand a better chance of getting down in two.
