Do you prefer traditional or modern links courses?

Ernie Smith, Conwy

Much as I love our classic links, I’m going to come down on the modern side. I just love the sheer wow-factor of courses like Doonbeg, Enniscrone and Rosapenna’s Sandy Hills. If the designers of old had greater capability to get in among the towering dunes, I suspect more would have done so.

In which counties have you played most golf?

Derek Jefferson, Redditch I’ve always lived close to the Kent-sussex border but have played far more in Sussex, where I’ve ticked off 73 courses with just a handful still unplayed. What I like about Sussex is the variety, from fine heathland golf at West Sussex and Royal Ashdown to the many downland courses and just a hint of links at Rye and Littlehampton.

What’s your most nerve-wracking 1st tee shot in the UK&I?

Martin Elderson, Bridport Anywhere where the 1st tee lies close to where people are milling about when confidence is low! Somewhere like Lahinch, even though the shot itself isn’t too intimidating. The 1st on the Melbourne course at Brocket Hall is pretty scary, with water all down the right and a steep bank on the left if you play too safe.
