NINE HOLES BRIMMING WITH CHARACTER

-

There are plenty of lovely and otherwise well-balanced courses that have one very special or different hole. These nine would make for a very distinctive and entertaining round...

1

From the fairway, you’d be forgiven for wondering where the green is. It’s straight ahead, but over the road.

2

The green on this dogleg right is wedged between the entrance road and Dawlish Warren’s station platform.

Tain – 1st, par 4 The Warren – 18th, par 4

3

North Berwick – 13th, par 4

This wonderful links has a few contenders including The Pit, with a drystone wall inches short of the green.

4

Yeovil (Newton) – 7th, par 4

Your ball needs to fly the steep railway embankment 170 yards short of the green before you then cross via a short tunnel.

5

Rochester & Cobham Park – 15th, par 4

The blind drive at this lovely dogleg is controlled from the tee by a solarpowered traffic-light system.

6

Kendal – 17th,

This delightful tiddler is played from an elevated tee to a green that is both hidden and protected by rock.

par 3

7

Royal Blackheath – 17th, par 4

An excellent hole whose semi-blind approach is controlled via an old railway signal left of the green.

8

The European – 12th, par 4

The green on this terrific Pat Ruddy design is a full 127 yards long!

9

Brocket Hall (Melbourne) – 18th, par 5
