PGA Championship Host Venues
The flagship event of the European Tour began life at a variety of different courses
Ashburnham
This quite different and very enjoyable links offers that perfect balance of golfing challenge and variety. It hosted the PGA in 1959, when local hero Dai Rees won, and again ten years later, when Bernard Gallacher reigned supreme. It opens with a short hole and from the 3rd to the 15th it is a traditional out-and-back routing. A quite different finishing trio concludes with a right-to-left dogleg in front of the clubhouse. GF: round: £55-£65; day: £70-£80
Little Aston
Peter Alliss won the PGA Championship when it was staged here and at Sutton Coldfield in 1962. This is an excellent parkland course on the northern outskirts of Birmingham designed by Harry Vardon and modified by Harry Colt. It plays through glorious, mature woodland and there is a beautiful sting in the tail – the penultimate hole has what is almost an island green, with a bunker protecting the route in. GF: round: £125
Hunstanton
The wonderful links at Hunstanton is a serious championship test that has hosted many important amateur events. It was home to the 1969 PGA, the last time it was held in England before the move to its Wentworth home. Martin Hawtree has made recent improvements that are totally in keeping with its James Braid heritage. Unusually for a links, you change direction on almost every tee from the 4th onwards. GF: round: £110; day: £145
