Lowry’s 2019 Open celebrations

-

After his responsibilities were completed at Portrush, you might have thought Lowry would have enjoyed a glass of champagne or two. Not right away! He had always planned to drive back to Dublin that night and stuck with it. Despite having just won The Open, he wanted to drive his family home. That says something about the man.

Leaving Portrush about 9pm, they made it back around 1am. Then it was time to head out. “I think word probably got around Dublin where we were going because there’s a bar I’ll go to on Dawson Street if going out with my friends and it was pretty busy – a nice bit of Jameson in the jug!” says Lowry.

There was some pretty jubilant celebrating and a famously hearty rendition of The Fields of Athenry. But things started to calm down into the wee small hours, giving chance for reflection. “When it got to about 4am, that was when it was really cool, sitting back, sitting out on Dawson St with hardly anybody there and it was just like, ‘Oh my God, what has just happened to me?’”

The party continued when Lowry went back to his hometown of Clara. “Walking up the street, we were surrounded and then we get up on stage and it looked to me like people for as far as you can see,” he says. “Everybody was in great form and the sun was shining. Not a bad word was spoken between anyone. Just incredible.”
