GM Verdict

The TP5 ball from Taylormade has gone from strength to strength since it was first released in 2017, continuing to offer all-round performance up there with the very best in the premium category.

New for 2021 is a dimple pattern designed to improve aerodynamics and increase carry distance. It remains the softer of the two TP5 models, ensuring an excellent balance of distance and spin.

On testing, we found it to offer exactly that. Distance off the tee was never an issue, while approaching greens it was very workable with an iron in hand. Flighting shots high and low at will seemed simple and the trajectories were consistent and predictable. Mid and short irons had good stopping power and distance, a pleasing combination that encouraged flag hunting.

On the green, it felt really nice off the putterface, too, a performance aspect that slips slightly under the radar. This made it easy to gauge the pace from the off even on greens that were new to us.

But it’s the feel that provided the lasting memory of the Taylormade TP5. Many balls at varying prices boast combined distance and spin but the feel of the TP5 is in an elite class.

From driver through to the flat-stick, the soft cover meant that, even when using it for the first time, making the adjustment from other brands was seamless.

Golfers with a low swing speed or a flat ball flight might be better suited to something else – the TP5X creates a higher flight while also offering a firmer, more solid feel.

But the latest TP5 is virtually faultless in every area of performance, especially for those who play a lot of competitive golf. Its feel leaves a lasting impression.
