Golf Monthly

Back where he belongs

- Michael Harris michael.harris@futurenet.com GOLF MONTHLY!

We’ve been back playing golf again for a good six weeks and, as I write this, indoor socialising is on the verge of restarting. It seems as if normality is edging closer and recent events in the world of professional golf have only served to reinforce that feeling, notably Rory Mcilroy returning to the winners’ circle at the Wells Fargo Championship. We should never be surprised when a player with so much talent wins a golf tournament, but there weren’t too many signs this victory was around the corner. We’d written as much in this month’s headline feature and had to perform some surgery after his unexpected victory – the nature of print publishing! Hopefully this is the start of a genuine resurgence for Rory. He hasn’t won a Major since 2014 and will be desperate to add to his tally of four.

I’m sure there have been some difficult times for Rory recently and his struggles have served as a reminder that no players are exempt from the stresses and pressures associated with professional golf. In his excellent feature on page 46, Alan Dymock investigates the unique mental challenges pro golf presents and the toll they can take on players’ well-being. Elsewhere in the features section, we sit down with likeable American Tony Finau and look at Old Tom Morris’ life and legacy 200 years after his birth.

If you struggle with your short game, our main instruction on five key scoring shots is a must-read, and if you don’t generate much distance off the tee, check out Clive Tucker’s three power drills on page 78. Our big 17-model driver test on page 102 might also be of some interest.

As you read this issue, you’ll hopefully notice a completely new look and feel and a number of new features and sections. We started planning the redesign of the magazine late last year and set out with the intention of making Golf Monthly a better read than it’s ever been in its proud 110-year history. I believe the team has delivered on that.

Special mentions to content editors Nick Bonfield and David Taylor – who have masterminded a lot of the new features – and the dynamic design duo of Kevin Eason and Jamie Latchford, who have worked tirelessly to deliver on the vision to create a fresh, premium aesthetic. I’d like to think founding editor Harold Hilton would approve of the latest incarnation of ‘The Golf

Monthly’, but more importantly that you, our loyal readers, enjoy what you see and read.
