Power drills
1Hanging back through impact costs you power. It stops you getting the pressure across to your left side that you need to help you push off properly. This drill will help. Start with your feet together on your backswing to help you rotate fully (inset). Then, just before you reach the top, move your left foot 12ins towards the target (main photo). This forward momentum is the catalyst required to generate the pressure in your left foot that allows you to push up, creating rotational speed and power.

The big toe in your trail foot plays a critical role in allowing you to ‘kick off’. If it lifts in the backswing you won’t be able to push off properly, so keep your big toe on the ground and retain some flex in your right knee to give your hips something to resist against. Try placing something under the outside of your right foot as you swing, such as the club here. See how much more powerful the correct image looks. 3
This drill can highlight if you cast the club too early in the downswing. Hold a ball loosely between the thumb and palm of your right hand. Set up, then bend your wrist backwards to move your elbow slightly inwards. Swing back, then try to throw the ball towards your target. If you cast early, you’ll throw it into the ground before impact. If you keep the energy stored up, you’ll release the ball powerfully down the line.
