R&A and USGA introduce new local rule to limit driver length

-

As part of ongoing research into hitting lengths across the various tours, The R&A and USGA have introduced a new Model Local Rule giving event organisers the option to reduce maximum driver length from 48 to 46 inches.

At professional or elite amateur tournaments from January 1, 2022, organisers will be able to enforce the new rule, which applies to all clubs with the exception of putters.

It follows the governing bodies’ 2020 Distance Insights Report, which stated that longer hitting distances and courses are “taking golf in the wrong direction”.

On the news, Martin Slumbers, chief executive of

Bryson has experimented with a 48-inch driver recently

The R&A, said: “We believe this is the right thing for the game at this time and it will provide tournament organisers with the flexibility to choose for themselves within the framework of the Rules.”

Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA, added: “We’ve worked closely with our industry partners to ensure the future for golf remains strong. It’s important to note that it is not a ‘Rule of Golf,’ and as such, it is not mandated for the average, recreational golfer. Rather, this is an available tool for those running competitive events.”
