Cure your slice

1A weak grip often leads to the club opening up, but even when they strengthen the grip, some people still need a little help on the takeaway. The red ball attached to the shaft here sits square to the clubface at address. On the takeaway, it should sit on the side of the club towards the target line, rather than away from it, with the clubface mirroring your spine angle (main photo). If you open the face on the takeaway, it will point behind you.

2Coming down, the red ball should point towards your head to stop the left wrist getting too bent and opening the clubface. This red ball drill encourages the flatter left wrist needed to close the clubface. Early rotation of the shoulders can also throw the club outside the line. Try keeping your back to the target a little longer at the top and then think about starting down with the arms (below right). This isn’t what should really happen, but it exaggerates the move the other way initially to help you retrain. 3

With regard to the grip, yes, you should have about two and half knuckles showing in the right or lower hand, but many golfers need to get the club more in the fingers of the left or upper hand too. The heel pad at the end of the little finger should be over the front of the club (left). You can use the centre line on most grips as a reference point. Then I like the idea of the life line behind the right thumb sitting right behind the left thumb, rather than on top of it (below).
