Norman Marshall
Tommy Fleetwood Academy, Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa, Merseyside
Norman began his training at Royal Birkdale under Richard Bradbeer – one of the first PGA Master Professionals – who had one of the most significant influences on his teaching. John Jacobs also made a huge impression – “Kind, patient and a great communicator” – and he remains the greatest teacher Norman has known, one of his strengths being his ability to break down complex ideas and principles for the student to understand.
Over the last 30 years, Norman has enjoyed teaching golfers of all abilities, from beginners to elite-level players. He vividly remembers the day a six-year-old Tommy Fleetwood came to the range, and has fond memories of their time working together. Watching him tee off in The Ryder Cup against Tiger Woods ranks as one of his proudest moments, although he has experienced many in his role as head coach at the Tommy Fleetwood Academy.
“The magic of my job is seeing the transformative effect succeeding at golf can have on people’s self-confidence and belief,” Norman says. Building that confidence is the biggest challenge, so Norman likes his sessions to have a relaxed atmosphere, which is when he feels students will learn the most.
Regular conversations with Fleetwood and European Tour player Lee Slattery mean Norman stays abreast of modern swing interpretations, and by continuing to study James Sieckmann, Stan Utley and James Ridyard, he is able to keep his short-game teachings razor sharp.
