GM verdict

Footjoy is hoping to grab your attention with its new Fuel shoe. Bolder in terms of aesthetics than you’ll find elsewhere in the range, Fuel aims to combine modern, athletic looks with high levels of golf-specific performance.

Over the years, Footjoy has excelled in the athletic shoe space – think D.N.A. and Hyperflex. As you’d expect, some models – like the Freestyle – have had a polarising effect. We think this year’s design, however, will have a far more universal appeal.

The synthetic upper might not have the refined look of the premium leather alternatives like the Premiere Series, but the benefit is how hard-wearing it is. We tested the white, blue and grey colourway and thought it was an incredibly versatile option that could be worn with trousers and shorts, in all seasons.

We wore Fuel on a very wet, muddy January day in the UK and

had absolutely no problems with water getting into the shoe. The synthetic uppers wiped clean after the round and, apart from some mud on the laces, it was pretty much as good as new.

Another area that really impressed was the traction on offer from the spikeless sole. Footjoy has taken some of the design elements from the superb Pro SL model and added them here. The result is enough grip and stability to transfer your weight with confidence and efficiency. Fuel also offers excellent comfort underfoot, although the upper could have been thicker or softer.

The Footjoy Fuel is set to be one of the top-performing spikeless golf shoes this year. The brand has nailed the aesthetics and combined high levels of golfspecific traction and stability with all-day comfort.
