Eamonn Darcy
At the 1987 Ryder Cup, Eamonn Darcy wasn’t given much hope in his singles against Ben Crenshaw. He’d played in three previous Ryder Cups and not won a single match. But the Irishman produced a stellar showing to secure a point and set Europe on their way to a first victory on American soil.
Darcy turned pro in 1968 and played competitively for 50 years. He was renowned for his bizarre swing. With a weak left-hand grip, he did all the work with his right arm. On the way back, his right elbow flew out creating a rectangular space between his arms. He then powered back down with his head popping up at impact making it look like he almost jumped through the ball.
