Moe Norman
Tiger Woods once said, “Only two players have ever truly owned their swings: Moe Norman and Ben Hogan.” And the swing Norman owned was by no means conventional. Setting the club way out in front of him and a foot behind the ball, he swung with his feet flat on the ground. The key to his famously consistent ball-striking was that his swing travelled on a single plane on the way back and through the ball.
You may not have heard much about him, but the action was seriously effective – he won 54 tournaments, set 33 course records, shot three 59s and made 17 holes-in-one! Leading the 1963 Saskatchewan Open by three, Norman found himself with a birdie putt on the final green. He had the tournament won but, to see if he could handle the pressure, deliberately putted into a greenside bunker before getting up and down for a bogey to win by two.
