Feel the flow

4Stance width

Your stance should be around shoulder-width apart on most iron shots, slightly wider with the driver and narrower with the short clubs. Make sure your toes aren’t turned in as this will restrict rotation. Instead, flare your lead foot out to help you turn through the shot.

As for ball position, with shortand mid-irons, it should be near the centre. As you work up through the bag into your long-irons and woods, it should move steadily forward until it is in line with roughly your lead heel when hitting driver.

1Address

Good flow in your swing starts at address. Some golfers are too static over the ball, which can result in a jerky takeaway. From there, it’s hard to get the club and body working together, which leads to inconsistency. I like to see a couple of club waggles. Don’t go overboard, but one or two makes sure the body and mind are primed. Working on something consistent here will make a big difference, especially when the pressure is on.

2Ball position Smooth takeaway

This drill is used by Nelly Korda, who has one of the best rhythms in world golf. At the range, place a ball about a club’s width behind the one you’re hitting and gently push it away as you take the club back. This will help you sync everything up.

3 Work through the gears

It’s vital not to rush the transition. Golfers are guilty of being too eager to get to impact. Although it lasts less than a second, patience is key in the downswing. Think of it like working through the gears as you build speed, and aim for your swing to be at its fastest just after the ball.
