Cobra Aerojet drivers £429

GM verdict

Cobra’s Aerojet range of drivers offers a new, aerodynamic design that promises greater clubhead speed from a more efficient overall design. The shape of the head has lifted the skirt of the club a lot higher off the ground, with a more curved crown contributing to an altogether more aerodynamically solid clubhead.

The new design certainly worked during our testing as we immediately saw an uptick in our clubhead speed. Not only was it fast compared with the previousgeneration LTDX driver, but it was the fastest clubhead speed we achieved against all other new drivers this year.

Alongside this impressive speed was an average spin rate of 2,494rpm, which gave a slightly higher but controlled ball flight. The average carry distance of 291 yards was seriously impressive, making it the longest driver in our test this year. At impact, not much has changed in terms of acoustics, with the Aerojet still offering a satisfying crunch when you strike the ball, a note that is perhaps a fraction louder than we heard in last year’s LTDX.

For those who have a tendency to slice the ball, the Aerojet Max driver comes with draw-bias weights built into the head to promote a straighter ball flight – there is also a low-spin model that has a slightly more compact head. We struggled to find much of a difference between the standard and LS models in terms of carry distances during our testing and we’d therefore lean to the more forgiving – and still long – standard model for most golfers. The overall styling this year is a lot more subtle than Cobra drivers from the past, but this isn’t a bad thing and we think it should appeal to more golfers. Coming in at £429, it’s at the lower end of new driver prices and represents solid value for money considering the performance on offer.
