In March this year, the USGA and R&A is­sued its an­nual Dis­tance Re­port, a joint state­ment that sent rip­ples of shock through the game of golf. The shock wasn’t that the re­port noted that driv­ing dis­tances were on the rise – that much was more than a sus­pi­cion. It was more that the USGA and the R&A vowed to in­ves­ti­gate fur­ther – and the un­spo­ken in­fer­ence that change could pos­si­bly be afoot. Al­most six months later, that in­ves­ti­ga­tion re­mains on­go­ing, with no an­nounce­ment on when it will be com­plete or its find­ings made pub­lic. But those six months have given us time to fully di­gest the Dis­tance Re­port and to dig deeper. Over the next 12 pages, we at­tempt to present the ev­i­dence – all you need to know on the Dis­tance De­bate, from how we got here to where the game goes next.
