In March this year, the USGA and R&A issued its annual Distance Report, a joint statement that sent ripples of shock through the game of golf. The shock wasn’t that the report noted that driving distances were on the rise – that much was more than a suspicion. It was more that the USGA and the R&A vowed to investigate further – and the unspoken inference that change could possibly be afoot. Almost six months later, that investigation remains ongoing, with no announcement on when it will be complete or its findings made public. But those six months have given us time to fully digest the Distance Report and to dig deeper.
