SPEED THRILLS

You could benefit from a brand’s more forgiving head than its hero driver.

Testing the mettle of three fast and forgiving drivers.

Just because the Callaway Rogue, Ping G400 and TaylorMade M3 are stacked with all the latest technologies and used by many of the world’s top players, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best options for you. Each manufacturer also offers a more forgiving driver at a cheaper price point. You will have to sacrifice some bells and whistles (often the ultra-adjustability), but many amateurs would benefit far more from having a simpler club engineered to protect ball speeds and direction on off-centre hits rather than absolutely maximise performance out the sweet spot. Equipment editor Kit Alexander and Elite Pro Golf’s Sam Sharpe tested the Ping G400 Max, Callaway XR Speed and TaylorMade M4 drivers to discover just how forgiving these clubs are and identify the type of golfers they would suit.
