From 1990-1996, to­tal purses on the PGA Tour rose from $82m to $101m – about 3.4% per year. By 2008, purses to­talled $292m, up 9.3% per year since Tiger joined the Tour. Around 50 cents of ev­ery dol­lar won on the Tour from 1997 to 2008 can be at­trib­uted to the ‘Tiger Woods ef­fect’. It’s es­ti­mated that some $29m of Phil Mick­el­son’s al­most $56m earn­ings and $36m of Vi­jay Singh’s $70m earn­ings were down to the Tiger Woods ef­fect.
