‘To say The Moonwalk changes lives is an understatement – from the health benefits to the camaraderie and the glow that comes from knowing you’ve raised in excess of £111 million for charity. I am proud GH has sponsored Walk the Walk for eight years. In 2017 I’ll be taking part again. Why not join us? Lindsay Nicholson, Editorial Director
THE MOONWALK LONDON 2017
The moon is bright overhead as you pound the pavements in your decorated bra. And as you hear the stories and cheers from the women and men walking alongside you, the atmosphere is electric. Welcome to The Moonwalk 2017 – everyone’s invited!
In May 2017, it will be 20 years since, in the first event organised by Walk the Walk, a group of women walked 26.2 miles through the streets of London by night in their bras. And to mark the occasion, the theme this year will be the Roaring Twenties – think feather boas, fringes, sequins and headdresses.
HOW TO TAKE PART
If you want to walk the Half Moon (13.1 miles, plus an extra two) or the Full Moon (26.2 miles), sign up now at walkthewalk.org. It kicks off from Clapham Common on Saturday 13 May 2017.
Or you can sign up to be one of the 2,000 volunteers needed on the night to make the whole event run smoothly – from cheering on walkers along the way to handing out the medals at the finish line.
The Moonwalk Scotland will be taking place in June, with four different distance options – including a challenging double marathon of 52.4 miles – plus, it’s a great way to see the sights of Edinburgh.
✽ If you like to combine a challenge with a holiday, The Moonwalk Iceland is a 26.2-mile walk around Lake Mývatn, taking in lakes, mountains and geysers. ✽ And, for the truly brave, The Moonwalk also runs a Three Land Challenge: the three walks in London, Edinburgh and Iceland, spanning 78.6 miles. To find out more about all The Moonwalk events, visit walkthewalk.org or call 01483 741430. ✽ In the two decades since Walk the Walk was founded, it has raised £111 million for breast cancer charities – money that has funded vital research as well as support for the women, and men, who are coming to terms with this devastating diagnosis. ✽ Some of that money has gone towards funding Scalp Coolers – special machines that help people who are undergoing chemotherapy to keep their hair. Money raised by the organisation has already funded 640 Scalp Coolers in 270 hospitals. ✽ Funding from Walk the Walk has made the Legacy Study by Breast Cancer Now’s ground-breaking research into secondary breast cancer possible. This allows patients with secondary breast cancer to donate tissue for research shortly after death and is the first study of its kind in the UK. ✽ Grants have also been made by Walk the Walk to help set up Breast Cancer Now’s Tissue Bank, the UK’S first national breast cancer tissue bank.
