SARAH’S TIPS FOR… avoiding allergic reactions

While it’s true allergies have increased dramatically, the worst are still uncommon. But even mild allergies can make life miserable

-

1

Hayfever season may be over, but many people still suffer from perennial rhinitis – blocked/itchy nose related to house dust mites or pets. Try hypoallergenic pillows, or use a steroid nasal spray.

2

Itchy, red patches of skin are often due to irritation or allergy. Ask your pharmacist for antihistamine tablets or a mild steroid cream and avoid the cause if possible.

3

Asthma, eczema and hayfever are linked. If you have one then you’ll be prone to others. Asthma is often worsened by colds or cold weather – keep your inhaler to hand.

4

Most medicines can cause allergies, usually manifested as a blotchy, itchy rash. Symptoms tend to occur within days or weeks of starting a medicine – see your GP.

5

Anaphylaxis is a lifethreatening allergic reaction – culprits include nuts, fish, eggs or fruit. Look out for tongue-swelling, wheezing and collapse. It’s always an emergency!
