I’ve been trying to ignore my menopausal moustache, but it’s now really noticeable! Is laser treatment suitable?
ALaser treatment is an effective way to banish facial hair and six sessions should see off 70% of growth. However, it only works if there is melanin – dark pigment – in the hairs, so if yours are blonde or white, think again. Your skin colour makes a difference, too. ‘Alexandrite lasers are best if you’ve pale skin but olive or black skins need an Nd Yag laser to avoid burning,’ says consultant dermatologist Nick Lowe of the Cranley Clinic. And make sure that you sign up for laser treatment, not intense pulsed light. ‘IPL may be cheaper but blistering is far more likely,’ warns Dr Lowe. As no qualifications are needed to operate a laser, check out the clinic. ‘Ideally, a dermatologist or a skin specialist physician should be in charge,’ says Dr Lowe. That way, you can be confident of good results if laser treatment is recommended, or you can be prescribed cream to slow hair growth or other treatments.
