ASK OUR EXPERTS Don’t pay too much tax
If you live alone, have a student in the house or are a carer, you could be entitled to a discount – or even a refund. Here’s how to claim...
LIVING ALONE!
A full council tax bill is based on at least two adults living together, but if you live alone or with no other adult, you can get a 25% discount on your tax.
STUDENTS
Your children don't need to pay council tax while they live in an all-student house at university. Exemption forms can be found on most university websites, or get them to check with their landlord. If they live with you and are a full-time student, you are eligible for a 25% discount Anyone on an accredited apprentice scheme and getting paid less than £195 a week is also entitled to a discount, as are student nurses and young people under 25 who get funding from the Skills Funding Agency or Young
People's Learning Agency. Find out more at gov.uk/council-tax/ who-has-to-pay.

You may get a discount if you own more than one property: furnished second homes may have their tax reduced by up to 50%, but it's up to individual councils to decide. The rules are changing for unused and unfurnished properties, as the Government has said that it is unacceptable for homes to be empty in the midst of a housing crisis. Empty second homes will incur a l00% council tax premium, although there is no news as to when this will be introduced.
