SILVER LINING Embrace your grey hair

There’s never been a better time to be a SILVER SIREN, says GH beauty director Eve Cameron

It used to be that grey hair said ‘old and dull’. But now grey or silver is a positive colour choice, just like brunette, red or blonde, and is being embraced in a way we haven’t seen before. ‘There was a stigma about going grey,’ says colourist Josh Wood. ‘It was seen as opting out and letting yourself go. But, in recent years, there’s been a trend for young women to bleach their hair platinum or titanium and the looks are all over social media. At the same time, a lot of my older clients are asking, “How would I look with grey hair?” Grey and silver is being accepted and celebrated by more and more women.’

Of course, some women naturally go a better shade of grey than others, and a year of growing out roots can be hell, especially if you have darker hair. However, hairdressers are more technique driven these days and can help you on the journey away from the tyranny of touching up roots on a weekly basis. It could involve taking you from brunette to bronze to blonde then silver, perhaps strategically placing high- or lowlights. Equally, if you’re already silver, you can enhance it with toners and shampoos that minimise yellow tones and conditioners to ramp up the shine and manageability. If you want something with more oomph, to look a little more ‘steel’ perhaps, you could opt for one of Redken’s semi-permanent Silver Statements – gloss-giving colours to personalise grey hair, available at its Blending Bars in salons across the UK (redken.co.uk).
