5 MAKE-UP MUSTS

Any change of hair colour means rethinking your make-up. Here’s what the pros recommend

-

AVOID SHIMMERY TEXTURES

‘If you’re looking for a hit of radiance, try skin-flattering satin textures,’ says makeup artist Sharon Dowsett. ‘Too much shimmer in a product will draw attention to lines and look harsh, especially on cooler skin tones.’ For a dewy look, she likes Illamasqua Beyond Veil Primer, £34, under foundation.

TRY A TREND

‘I’m going grey myself and the one trend I’ll definitely embrace for spring is a diffused pinky-red lip,’ says Sharon Dowsett. ‘Apply a rosy pink shade, then, using fingers, dab a balm all over the top to mute it. It’s low maintenance and will just fade naturally like a petal. Very flattering.’

GET YOUR BROWS RIGHT

‘My number-one rule is to match the colour of brow gel, pencil or powder to your eyebrow hair,’ says head make-up and trend artist for Benefit, Lisa Potter-dixon. ‘Often, when hair is silver, brows remain dark, and you shouldn’t be afraid to embrace this.’ However, if your eyebrows are silver, too, try a shade designed for blondes to define brows without looking overdone.

GO EASY WITH THE BRONZER

Watch out for muddy tones, which will wash you out, especially if you’re pale, advises Max Factor ambassador Caroline Barnes. ‘Instead, mix a tiny bit of powder bronzer with a touch of peach blush, to lift the complexion just enough without looking over the top.’ Try Max Factor Bronzer in Light Gold, £9.99, and Sisley Phyto Blush Twist in Papaya, £43.

PLAY WITH COLOUR

Deep, dark colours are really flattering when you have silver hair, according to make-up artist Jaimee Thomas. ‘Use shadows or pencils in forest greens, aubergine or deep greys and apply close to the root of the lashes, gently smoking out with brushes. This will subtly warm up the whole face while making the eyes pop.’ Jaimee recommends Kiko Long Lasting Eyeshadow Stick in Dark Taupe and Golden Chocolate, £6.90 each.
