You’ve seen the adverts, received the annoying phone calls and even seen Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger talking about it, but you may still be convinced that payment protection insurance (PPI) compensation is as rare as hen’s teeth – don’t be too sure. The final deadline for claims is August 2019 and so it really is time to take action – you could be better off by thousands of pounds.

PPI was commonly sold against credit cards, loans and other financial products, but many of these policies were missold. Not everyone was eligible to make a claim and many simply didn’t need them – if this was you, you could be entitled to compensation. Dig out the paperwork if you can find it, but don’t worry if you can’t. Details of loans or credit cards in the last six years will be on your credit record. Check this using agencies such as Experian, Equifax and Callcredit, which are free to use, then write to the relevant companies to see if you had PPI – download a template letter from moneyadviceserticles/lettertemplates, and get a response within eight weeks.
