RUN­NER-UP He­ston from Waitrose Golden De­li­cious £14 for 800g This has wow fac­tor. It’s filled with a honey and Cal­va­dos sauce, and cin­na­mon and cloves en­rich the over­all taste, but it’s quite boozy. SCORE 79/100

BEST OF THE REST Cole’s Black For­est £6.99 for 454g; tip­ A great twist on a clas­sic. This has juicy sul­tanas, glacé cher­ries and kirsch, and is filled with a rich choco­late sauce. Al­mond oil adds a marzi­pan flavour, but it was a lit­tle too sweet for some. SCORE 77/100

Sains­bury’s Taste the Dif­fer­ence 18 Month Ma­tured £9 for 900g Glossy, dark and stud­ded with vine fruit and can­died orange peel, this has a deep yet mel­low taste of Cognac, and a touch of cin­na­mon and ginger. Beau­ti­fully moist with an en­joy­able crunch from nuts, but quite bit­ter. SCORE 76/100

Dayles­ford Or­ganic £20 for 900g; dayles­ Testers praised the bal­anced flavour of this fruity and tangy pud­ding. It smells zesty, with hints of rum and stout. The tex­ture is soft, but we would have liked more booze! SCORE 74/100
