Good Housekeeping (UK)

Let’s try to find a good balance

- Gaby Huddart EDITOR-IN-CHIEF gaby.huddart@hearst.co.uk

It’s that time of the year when many of us come up with New Year’s resolutions and set ourselves the mission of doing more exercise, shifting a bit of weight, giving up a bad habit and generally becoming a new, improved, happier version of ourselves! Let’s face it, though – if you go on a hardcore diet, it’s almost inevitably doomed to fail. And if you push yourself to do an exercise you hate, it’s an absolute certainty that you won’t be doing it come spring! So, in this issue, we’re bringing you an exercise planner that will help you find the activity to suit you and your goals (page 82). We’re also highlighting the rise in ‘social prescriptions’ and the importance of finding a hobby that brings you joy (page 86), plus we’re giving you some golden rules for eating (page 78). Basically, it’s time to say ‘no’ to diets and focus on what you can eat – not what you can’t. Our aim is to help you achieve a good balance that will result in a healthier, happier you long-term.

That’s why I feel very comfortable with the brilliant recipes the team have created for you this month: an amazing selection of 20 feelgood recipes (page 126), packed with goodness and designed to give you zest, but also a few decadent desserts for sharing with loved ones on a special occasion like Valentine’s Day (page 144). A treat once in a while is so important, and there to be enjoyed!

Balance in life is something that runs through our interview with cover star Hermione Norris (page 10). The Cold Feet star works really hard at a job she adores, but harmonises this with absolute devotion to her family. I found her to be exceptionally thoughtful and erudite – and I know you will, too.

Hermione also tells us about her favourite holiday destinations, and it’s definitely the season when we all start to think about booking a break to see us through the winter months. If you need some inspiration, look no further! We’ve compiled our brilliant holiday hotlist for 2019 (page 164) and we’re also delighted to share with you a fabulous selection of Good Housekeeping Holidays that we think you’ll love (page 171). Having adored Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road Adventure, I am considering booking the tour that follows in her footsteps. Now is the time to look forward to the adventures of the year ahead, after all…
