EDITOR’S NOTE

As we go to press and I read the final pages of this issue, it strikes me just how resilient, imaginative and inventive you, the Good Housekeeping audience, are. For We All Have The Power To Reinvent (page 56), we interviewed four readers who changed their lives to put themselves on a better footing and now feel happier and more fulfilled. Each of them relied on nothing more than their inner strength and creativity to bring about change. The same is true for Karen Davis, who writes inspirationally on how she came up with the concept of a transformative power decade (page 66).

Enjoying reinvention is something many of you talked to us about when we did research with you earlier this year. Gone are the old pathways through life and traditional stereotypes about what we do at certain ages. New careers, businesses, relationships and pastimes now begin at any stage, and there’s an excitement and energy that comes from more circuitous life journeys. We regularly face new possibilities and opportunities: the key is to be open to them.

That sentiment resonates with our cover star Fiona Bruce, who says she’s never had a long-term plan but is up for trying every challenge that comes her way (page 16). As the face of much-loved TV programmes, both serious (Question Time) and entertaining (Antiques Roadshow), she certainly demonstrates great versatility. But while she’s rarely off our screens, she’s no workaholic and says her off-duty pleasures have real importance to her, including horse riding and, more particularly, seeing her old friends.

As we head towards the end of the year, catching up with friends is something we all put high on the agenda so, if you’re having the girls over, look no further than our ideas on how to make your home warm and welcoming (page 134), plus our bumper cookery section bursting with good things (page 152). Enjoy the issue!

PS. Christmas is still a few weeks away, but I know lots of you like to get ahead, so we have your Stir-up Sunday recipes (page 180), plus great gift ideas from our experts (page 99). Why not give your friends a GH subscription? It’s the gift that lasts a whole year!
