The NEW WAYS to WEAR TAILORING

Take a tip from the guys this season and introduce some menswear inspired styling into your winter wardrobe. Boy, this looks good!

Wide-legged trousers in oversized checks might not immediately shout ‘office appropriate’, but wear them in a smart monochrome colour palette and you’ll be surprised at how work-ready they are. Add a high-neck silk blouse with delicate ruffle detail and a pair of studded loafers – this season’s hero flats – and you’ll be casually cool but seriously stylish.

Blouse, £89, 6-18, Hobbs. Trousers, £400, xs-l, Theory at Fenwick. Glasses, £105, Bailey Nelson. Shoes, £229, 2½-11, Pretty Ballerinas

Never underestimate the power of a bold shade; just one solid hit is all you need to totally transform a look. Pair a shirt-and-blazer combo with tapered trousers in a vibrant tomato red to instantly change this outfit into something ultra-feminine. Block heels and a pretty velvet bow will max the girlie credentials.

PLAY WITH COLOUR

Blazer, £79.99, xs-l, Mango. Blouse, £22, 6-22, Next. Trousers, £249, xs-l, Winser London. Ribbon (used for bow tie), £3.75, John Lewis & Partners. Belt, £10, s-xl, Dorothy Perkins. Shoes, £188, 4-8, J.crew

You probably already know that the foundation of tailoring is separates, but the way to wear them this season is to choose tonal pieces. Elegant shades, such as cerulean blue, work best paired with neutrals, such as camel. A pussy-bow blouse and pencil skirt add enough class to make this look equally suitable for a presentation or a party.

Blazer, £38, 6-22, Next. Blouse, £24.99, 8-20, Lindex. Skirt, £80, 6-20, Boden. Earrings, £7.50, Marks & Spencer. Bag, £159, Kurt Geiger. Shoes, £225, 3-9, L.k.bennett

Smart doesn’t have to mean stuffy. The autumn/winter catwalks were awash with lightweight rollnecks layered under tops and blouses, and it’s a low-key take on smart dressing. The best way to layer? With a simple rollneck under a graphic-print top, worn with a tweed or houndstooth skirt. The added bonus? Whether you’re in the office or out and about, all this layering will keep you nice and warm.

Blouse, £109, 6-16, Ted Baker. Rollneck, £59; skirt, £109, both 6-16, Baukjen. Boots, £189, 3-8, Jigsaw

Power dressing is no longer about oversized jackets and 1980s shoulder pads. This season’s suit can be any cut you like (tailored and tapered, two-piece or three-piece) but go for colour. A vibrant shade will stand out for all the right reasons.

Blazer, £198; trousers, £130, both 6-16, Libby. Shirt, £85, 8-16, Gant. Shoes, £129, 2-9, Kurt Geiger

Your hero item to nail the tailoring trend? A trouser suit. Too masculine? Downplay boyish vibes with a cinched-in waist and heels. If you want to keep the look less Working Girl and more working it, pick a statement tee.

Blazer, £199; trousers, £140, both 6-16, Jigsaw. T-shirt, £30, 8-16, Great Plains. Earrings, £220, Soru at Fenwick. Belt, £100, 6-24, Elliot Rhodes. Shoes, £49, 3-8, Faith at Debenhams

When you hear tailoring, do you think leather? Maybe not, but let us explain why you should… leather says look at me; it says I’m in charge; it says I’m the boss. And a dress is the way to wear it. Pair with a boyish cover-up in autumn’s must-wear print: heritage check.

Coat, £545, xs-l, Bimba Y Lola. Dress, £699, 6-16, Baukjen. Blouse (just seen), £119, 6-16, Ted Baker. Shoes, £139, 2-9, Kurt Geiger

One item you need in your wardrobe? A pair of culottes, actually. They’re smart enough for work, low-key enough for a lunch date and pretty enough for an evening out. Oh, and they’re set to be everywhere soon. They are on the boyish side, so temper that with a ruffle detail here and an animal print there.

Jumper, £170, xs-l, ba&sh. Trousers, £38, 6-22, Next. Shoes, £221, 4-8, J.crew
