Love your LIPSTICK

-

‘I love getting creative with my kit,’ says make-up artist Caroline Barnes. ‘Lay out everything you have on the kitchen table, put it into different categories and start changing things up.’ When it comes to colour that earns its keep, there’s little as versatile as lipstick, she adds: ‘These are techniques I use on shoots, for bridal make-up and on myself for a long day of meetings.’

Lipstick can make a brilliant alternative to eyeshadow

TRY LIPSTICK ON CHEEKS

Liquid lipsticks make the perfect sheer cheek stain. ‘They’re created for staying power and you only need the tiniest amount – just pat on and blend in with your fingers,’ says Caroline. There are millions of shades to choose from, too, she adds, so if you’ve never found exactly the right tone in a blush, you may well find it in one of your lip colours.

AND ON EYES, TOO

‘I love coral and watermelon pink on eyes, but shadows rarely have enough punch,’ says Caroline. ‘Often the pigment in lipstick is stronger and more vibrant, making it a brilliant alternative to eyeshadow. With hydrating formulas, you’ll also get a modern-looking sheen – just wash over the lid and add a sleek lash and groomed brows.’

LOVE YOUR LINER

Give underused lip liners a new lease of life (and tap into the ‘bitten lip’ trend that will be big this autumn) by filling in the middle of your mouth with colour, then pressing and blending lip balm over the top, fading out towards the lipline – or try the reverse by scribbling your liner over well-balmed lips and blending in with a finger.

MIX YOUR OWN MATTE

Glowing and velvety, modern mattes are the opposite of chalky. This autumn, they’re bolder than ever – rich reds, deep plums and brick-red browns. ‘I love to create my own matte lip by tapping powder blush or eyeshadow over the top of a satin lipstick,’ says Caroline. ‘If you like a matte finish but don’t want the dryness, this is a nice way to do it.’
