5 CLASSIC CROWD-PLEASERS

Whether in large pots or in beds, every garden needs a few of these to set the scene…

1 OLIVE TREES

One or two olives in large terracotta pots say Mediterranean in an instant. As they are fairly slow growing, it pays to choose the most mature specimen you can. Make sure your pot is at least 60cm in diameter.

2 FIG TREES

The scent of fig leaves is almost as intoxicating as the soft fruit itself and will fill a courtyard with its heady fragrance. Potted fig trees tend to produce more fruit, so are well worth growing. ‘Brown Turkey’ is a reliable variety for the UK climate.

3 CENTURY PLANT

Agaves can thrive even in the ground in the UK, if the soil is really well drained. But to be on the safe side, go for large pots. Agave americana ‘Variegata’ is a beautiful form, with striped green and cream spikes.

4 PITTOSPORUM TOBIRA

The handsome, shiny evergreen leaves of this shrub instantly bring to mind southern European climes. It produces white flowers and grows up to two metres tall, so is excellent for creating a Mediterranean vibe. If you want a smaller version, go for the dwarf relative, pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’.

5 MEDITERRANEAN SPURGE

For a dramatic splash of chartreuse or yellow/green in spring, try a clump of Mediterranean spurge (Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii). Plant three in the ground for spring zing, summer presence and useful structure throughout the winter, too.
