Recent events have made home manicurists of many of us, so we tested gel nail kits to find which give DIY nails a professional finish.

Starter Kit (below), £59.99, Amazon, came out on top, scoring 83/100. Testers loved that the polish was quick to apply and didn’t streak, and found nails looked good for eight days, with no chipping or peeling. Our runner-up, Manucurist Nomad Full Kit Green Flash, £69, uk. manucurist.com, scored 80/100. Its plant-based polishes are made from 84% natural ingredients and took two coats to achieve a professional finish. Some noticed chipping after five days but nails looked healthy after removal. Le Mini Macaron Gel Manicure Kit (feelunique.com), a steal at just £34.99, scored 75/100. Its LED lamp has an impressive 30-second setting time (though each finger is done separately) and nails stayed chip-free for five days.
